The Mission of the Prison Ministry Grant Fund is to seek and serve Christ in all persons, especially those in prisons, detention centers, jails, and reentry programs. This will be done by distributing funds for the development and support of the mission and ministry of all God’s people within the unique and diverse body of Christians throughout the Diocese of Alaska.
Background – A resolution was passed at the Diocesan Convention in 2003 to collect an offering for prison ministry on the Sunday closest to September 1, the Feast Day of David Pendleton Oakerhater. At the 2009 Diocesan Convention a resolution was passed to implement the collection of the offering and to form a task force for prison ministry in the Diocese. Based on the work of the task force, the Standing Committee is rolling out a new Prison Ministry Grant program, starting in 2023.
The purpose of this grant is to enrich our prison ministries in the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska. Prison ministry, for the purpose of the grant, is defined as services to incarcerated individuals or groups, and those engaged in reentry programs.
The following guidelines define how earnings of this portion of the Fund can be spent –
- Activities that promote local congregational, deanery, or diocesan prison ministries.
- Prison ministry training events and retreats.
- Attendance at prison ministry training, conferences, retreats.
- Events or activities being funded must be after the grant deadline.
Who can Apply for this Grant
Any Episcopal groups in the Diocese of Alaska, such as congregations, deaneries or the Bishop’s office.
Grant Applications must be postmarked or submitted by the Deadline, which is October 11, each year.
Total grant amount available – $5,000.
